YUMEARTH 'FREE FROM' AND ORGANIC CREDENTIALS
We thought you would like to see what YumEarth say about the provenance of their products:
This is taken directly from the Yum Earth US website www.yummyearth.com
"Ingredient Quality and Lab Testing:
We care deeply about the quality and consistency of all YumEarth products. We purchase ingredients from the most trusted sources in the world. We invite independent 3rd party quality auditors into our facilities to perform surprise quality and safety inspections, and we submit our products to independent food testing labs for quality, contaminants and irregularities regularly, including for vitamin content, lead, arsenic, and nutrient content, to name a few examples. We are extremely proud of our superior record of safety and quality as repeatedly demonstrated by audit and lab results and are proud that no lab test has ever shown any unacceptable level of lead, arsenic, or any contaminant in any YumEarth product. We are aware that from time to time certain ingredients gain media attention for being more healthy or less healthy, but we remain vigilant and consistent and will always continue these quality assurance testing practices to be certain of the quality that goes into YumEarth products before we offer them for sale to you no matter what ingredients we use and no matter what ingredient may catch headlines in the media for a few days as happens from time to time."
1: Are any of the major allergens, including peanuts or tree nuts, used in your product? No, plus our plants do not produce anything with tree-nuts or peanuts.
2: What about Cross Contamination? Our facilities are free of peanuts, tree nuts, gluten, dairy, wheat, soy, sesame, shellfish, and eggs. The equipment is thoroughly washed before making YumEarth organic candy, but the equipment is not cleaned between flavors, so please know there is a risk that a trace amount of berry juice from one flavor may touch another flavor during production.
3: Organic Tapioca Syrup? We stopped using Tapioca Syrup in 2008, so any mention of tapioca syrup on any of our bags or packaging would mean that the bag is either up to 5 years old or we have not yet updated the packaging via a reprint, but please know that we are removing the mention of Tapioca Syrup on all reprints of our packaging as we do reprint them from time to time because we do not use this ingredient.
4: Questions about Safflower Oil or Citrus Oils?
The safflower oil we use is highly refined so it does not contain any allergen proteins or pollen that would cause an allergic reaction.
Razzmatazz Berry - No Safflower, No Orange, No Lemon
Cheeky Lemon - No Safflower, No Orange, Lemon Yes

Very Very Cherry - Safflower Yes
Googly Grape - Safflower Yes

5: Questions about colors: YumEarth products are colored naturally with fruits, vegetables and roots (NO FOOD DYE #4 or #5 or Blue Lake...).
6: High Fructose Corn Syrup?
We do not use high fructose corn syrup in any product. The most frustrating thing about high fructose corn syrup, in our never humble opinion, is that it insidiously appears in foods we do not expect to see sugar in, such as bread, ketchup, salad dressings, yogurt, etc...which causes the body to crave ever more sweet things in foods you do not expect to be "sweetened".
7: Natural Flavors in Certified Organic Food:
Food that is Certified Organic under USDA’s National Organic Program (NOP) must be grown and processed using organic farming methods without synthetic pesticides, bio-engineered genes, petroleum-based fertilizers and sewage sludge-based fertilizers and may include natural flavors using only non-synthetic sources and must not be produced using synthetic solvents or synthetic carrier systems or any artificial preservative. MSG and other unannounced artificial ingredients are not permitted in certified organic food. Natural Flavors used in organic food must not contain artificial ingredients or added colors or anything that is processed to fundamentally alter the raw product.
All our Natural Flavors are Organic Compliant Natural Flavors and conform to the regulations of both the FDA and the very strict National Organic Plan (NOP) by the USDA as described above. These YumEarth natural flavors do not contain added MSG or other junk that we would not be proud to put in our family’s mouths. Please note that we consider our Natural Flavors to be secret recipes so we do not reveal the contents of our Natural Flavors. We are aware that some people may not be able to eat some of our flavors because we are unable to reveal the secret recipe and we are truly sorry for this inconvenience.
8. Organic Brown Rice Syrup - Is it safe?
Some brown rice syrup is sadly sourced from areas where previous crops such as cotton have grown that are highly absorbent of arsenic in the soil. This occurs in the southeastern part of the US as well as other places. We do not source from these places and have no idea why any food company would. We test for lead and arsenic and other potential contaminants and have done so since we began making YummyEarth items over 9 years ago when we invented our lollipop recipe for our family. Arsenic, for example, is measured at <.001 ppm in our lollipops and gummy bears via the AOAC Official Method 984.27.
9. Check with your Physician:
We appreciate your allergy questions and always suggest you consult an allergy specialist or physician to
determine if you should consume our product.
Mango Tango, Chili Mango Mambo, Perfectly Peach, Orange Squeeze, and Blood Orange Cocktail may contain annatto.
All YumEarth Organics products are non-GMO as we both strictly comply with USDA organic certification rules and choose only the finest ingredients available. We removed redundant label claims from our packaging, such as casein–free and non-GMO, to simplify our packaging, but we realize this might have caused some confusion.
Therefore, as we update each package design or introduce new items we will consider adding some or all of
these label claims back onto our packaging to avoid this confusion.
12. Do you need amazing tasting CORN FREE sweets?
The only ingredient that may have corn in our certified organic lollipops, drops, and gummy bears and worms, and our fruit snacks is the non-GMO ascorbic acid we use.
13: Letter from a concerned and confused customer received on March 11th 2013:
"I see your lollipops have "natural flavors" but Mike Adams at Natural News & (everywhere there's an organic website) says that those things are code for hidden chemicals such as MSG and other nasties. How do I know there's not any nasty chemicals in your stuff with those questionable words? Since your ingredient list reads:
"natural flavors, organic black carrots, organic black currant, organic apple, organic carrot, organic pumpkin,
ascorbic acid..." I think it's fair to assume that the "organic black carrots, organic black currant, organic apple, organic carrot, organic pumpkin" are NOT the "natural flavors" in question, since you put a comma after "natural flavors". Also, your label says "non-GMO citric acid (from beet sugar - not corn)," but I understand most sugars from beets is GMO because beets are GMO and yours doesn't say "organic beets" and even so, GMO Journal reports that all "organic" crops of plants that are GMO (soy, corn, cotton, canola, beets etc...) all have GMO cross- contamination. So how do you know your beet sugar is not GM since all beets are and yours aren't organic???
Furthermore I see "ascorbic acid" and anyone in the organic community knows that all ascorbic acid is derived from corn, a GMO. Nowhere does it say "organic ascorbic acid not from corn". Do your candies contain GMOs and corn or not? It's very confusing. I wish you made your labels more clear, in this day and age when there's instructions for dummies on shampoo bottles, why not provide full disclosure for educated people for a change. It's close but no cigar...Please advise as I'm really hoping yours in not yet another "fake organic" company, considering that I just purchased a bag of your lollipops."
Our Response: "Please see #7 above regarding our natural flavors. Also, we do not put nasties or added MSG into our natural flavors. Sergio and I are both proud and ethical parents who created these treats for our children whom we love. We do not cheat them and we share the same respectful treatment with you. Many people do not realize that non-GMO corn (for ascorbic acid) and non-GMO sugar beets (for citric acid) are actually available from other countries that seem to love their inhabitants more. We purchase our ingredients globally and proudly use the finest ingredients. We were horrified when the entire sugar beet industry in the US converted to GMO, but we had never purchased this ingredient from the USA up to that point or since as we have always preferred the non-GMO sugar beet based citric acid that could not be cross contaminated with GMO crops.
The above customer letter is how we felt when we founded YummyEarth and how we still feel about so many foods. We share this frustration. It is the essence of why we started YummyEarth.
Letter received from another customer on March 12th in response to my response above:
"I wanted to thank you. I have been purchasing your candy for about the last six months and we really enjoy them! I was reading your ingredients page and was so glad to see the letter you posted from a concerned customer! I had many of the same questions myself. I am constantly learning new information on health and gmo's. Your response to that letter cleared up all my questions. I feel confident that your products are not only safe but a tasty treat for my family. Thanks for taking the time to source superior products!
